When it comes to skin care, we all have our own routine. Have you ever asked yourself if your daily skin care routine is good? Are you overdoing it? Or should you be making more effort? Are you using the right products for your skin type? Most of us make mistakes, usually out of lack of knowledge, not lack of commitment. Sometimes, even with the best of intentions to give our skin the best treatment it deserves, we can mess up.

1. Not drinking enough water
Our skin is about 70% water. So, it needs water to stay healthy. Dermatologists say that dehydration is one of the greatest enemies of the skin. It leads to dry, irritated skin, which is more prone to wrinkling. Dehydration also alters the tone of skin. The only way to fix it is proper hydration. Make sure to take in an adequate amount of water daily to replace the quantities you lose through sweat.

2. Not enough sleep
Beauty sleep is not just an expression. Skin repairs itself during the night, and if you are constantly sleep-deprived, it will quickly show on your complexion. You need those 8 hours of sleep each night, unless you want to have skin that looks dull, pale and tired.

3. Exfoliating and moisturizing too much or too little
The problem with exfoliating is that most of us are guilty of overdoing it. We all want to scrub away as much of that top skin layer as possible, but what we are actually doing is removing the protective barrier of our skin. This can only lead to redness, irritation, wrinkles, and even scarring. Exfoliating should be done no more than two to three times a week, using a gentle exfoliator. Avoid aggressive products and scrubs with uneven texture at all costs. Also, moisturizing is an imperative. You should moisturize your skin regularly, especially if it is oily. 4. Not wearing sunscreen
We all know that we shouldn’t go to the beach without sunscreen. However, even on a cloudy winter day, the sun rays can still hurt us. From adding ages to our skin, to causing skin cancer. That is why dermatologists recommend wearing sunscreen every day. If you’re using it, you better learn how to do it properly. Look for sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays, and make sure it has an SPF of 30 or higher. Most importantly, don’t forget to reapply it throughout the day. If your skin is acne-prone, opt for sunscreens that contain zinc or titanium, as they will protect you but won’t clog the pores.

5. Going to bed with makeup on
Forgetting to remove your makeup one night before going to bed is not tragic, but making it a habit is a disaster. It takes only 2 minutes to wash it off, and the repercussions to your skin are not at all naïve. Leaving your makeup on will lead to clogged pores and oil glands, which in turn will lead to acne and blemishes. As mentioned before, your skin renews itself during the night. If you don’t wash your face before bed, it will impede the skin’s regeneration. Invest just two minutes of your time, and you will have a fresh-looking, healthy complexion for years.
